We present new neutral atomic carbon [C I ] ( 3 P 1 ? 0 ) mapping observations within the inner ?7 kpc and ?4 of disks NGC 3627 4321 at a spatial resolution 190 pc 270 pc, respectively, using Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) Compact (ACA). combine these with CO(2?1) data from PHANGS-ALMA, literature CO for two other starburst and/or active galactic nucleus (AGN) galaxies (NGC 1808, 7469) aim studying: (a) distributions C emission; (b) observed line ratio R /CO = [ ](1?0 / CO(2?1 as function various properties; (c) abundance /CO]. find excellent correspondence between emission nearly uniform ? 0.1 across majority star-forming 4321. Accretion of gas onto nearby spiral galaxies

We present evidence for cosmological gas accretion onto spiral galaxies in the local universe. The accretion is seen through its effects on the dynamics of the extra-planar neutral gas. The accretion rates that we estimate for two nearby spiral galaxies are of the order of their star formation rates. Our model shows that most of the extra-planar gas is produced by supernova feedback (galactic f...

Chandra Observations of Nearby Spiral Galaxies

Chandra is revolutionising our understanding of the X-ray emission from spiral galaxies. Before Chandra, detailed extragalactic studies were limited to Local Group galaxies. We are now able to obtain detailed inventories of sources in galaxies outside the Local Group, allowing population studies for the first time. In this review I will first discuss some intriguing observations of globular clu...

CI and CO in the nearby spiral galaxies IC 342 and Maffei 2

We present J=2–1, J=3–2, J=4–3 CO and 492 GHz [CI] maps as well as J=2–1 and J=3–2 CO measurements of the central regions in the nearby Sc galaxies IC 342 and Maffei 2. In both galaxies. the distribution of CO and [CI] is strongly concentrated towards the center. These centers harbour modest starbursts. Both galaxies have nearly identical CO transitional ratios but the relative intensities of t...

Central Mass Concentration and Bar Dissolution in Nearby Spiral Galaxies

We use data from the BIMA Survey of Nearby Galaxies (SONG) to investigate the relationship between ellipticity and central mass concentration in barred spirals. Existing simulations predict that bar ellipticity decreases as inflowing mass driven by the bar accumulates in the central regions, ultimately destroying the bar. Using the ratio of the bulge mass to the mass within the bar radius as an...

Near-infrared spectroscopy of stellar populations in nearby spiral galaxies

We present high spatial resolution, medium spectral resolution near-infrared (NIR) Hand K-band long-slit spectroscopy for a sample of 29 nearby (z < 0.01) inactive spiral galaxies, to study the composition of their NIR stellar populations. These spectra contain a wealth of diagnostic stellar absorption lines, e.g., Mg I 1.575 μm, Si I 1.588 μm, CO (6–3) 1.619 μm, Mg I 1.711 μm, Na I 2.207 μm, C...
